Health Benefits of Pea Shoots

As a kid I use to hide peas under my mashed potatoes or feed them to the family dog when no one was looking. But now as an adult, when it comes to pea shoots, I actually look forward to eating them. We even have kids in the community who won’t touch peas but love pea shoots!




With it’s leafy foliage, and curly tendrils, it’s surprising that it tastes exactly like peas. The pea shoots microgreens might look totally different than we expect, but it’s fun to eat and can sometimes be considered more nutritious in some ways than the adult plant.Fun nutrition facts about pea shoots

  • It’s high in fiber

  • Vitamin C, E and A

  • potassium and phosphorus

  • High content of carotene and luetin

Studies have shown if you eat Peas in their young form (i.e. pea shoots), eating the leafs and tendrils can contribute to a higher in take of

  • Vitamin C

  • Antioxidants

  • Minerals (especially potassium)

Pea shoots are so easy to eat, you can toss them into the meals you’ve already made or like some in our community, grab them out of the container and eat them by the handful! Try adding them to your meals. It’s a quick way to add additional nutrients to your meals that you might’ve missed out on otherwise.
